I am excited to be the first Huron Pines AmeriCorps member serving at Legacy Land Conservancy! AmeriCorps is a national service program that brings dedicated citizens together to tackle the country’s most burgeoning issues, including such key areas as health, education, disaster services, and environmental stewardship. AmeriCorps stresses the ethic of service to others by connecting passionate individuals to organizations that assist communities in addressing their hardest challenges. Huron Pines AmeriCorps is an AmeriCorps program started in 2007 that specifically focuses on developing leaders in conservation in communities across Michigan through volunteer engagement, habitat restoration, environmental stewardship and improved environmental knowledge.  As an individual who from a young age has been passionate about the conservation of Michigan’s natural resources, the Huron Pines AmeriCorps program provided an ideal opportunity after achieving my Bachelor of Science to explore my interests in the conservation field while serving the populations of Southern Michigan as part of Legacy’s team.

The missions of Huron Pines AmeriCorps and Legacy Land Conservancy coincide in their commitment to securing a sustainable environment for both current and future generations through the preservation and restoration of Michigan’s natural habitat, agriculture, fresh water, and recreation. While serving at Legacy as the Preserve Stewardship Technician, I will join the Preserve Stewardship Manager and seasonal field crew in the stewardship and management of Legacy’s nature preserves performing tasks such as invasive species treatment and removal, preserve infrastructure maintenance, data collection and reporting. Additionally, I will aid in recruiting volunteers, and implementing outdoor educational programming. I also hope to conduct an amphibian coverboard survey at one of Legacy’s preserves! I am thankful to both the Huron Pines AmeriCorps program and Legacy Land Conservancy for allowing me to explore my interests in the conservation field through the numerous opportunities and experiences to come!
