A recent article in the Chelsea Update details the history, wildlife and current state of the Big Portage Marsh, Portage River and surrounding areas in Chelsea, Michigan.

Portage River, near Big Portage Marsh, is part of a system of creeks and rivers used by native Michiganders and settlers to travel across Michigan from Lake Erie to Lake Michigan.  Another of these creeks runs past Legacy’s Reichert Nature Preserve.  Nearly all of the rivers and creeks used for this purpose were dubbed Portage Creek!
