Dear Friends,
It has been two years since that fateful day in March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic thrust itself into our lives. Some days it feels like time has stood still. Other days it feels like the time has flown by.
Looking back on those first days, the first months, that first year—as we faced so much uncertainty—it overwhelms me how fortunate Legacy is to have the support of such a wonderful community. The dedication of our staff, board, partners, volunteers, donors, and supporters like you, during one of the most difficult and challenging times in Legacy’s history is like no other.
I am proud of what we accomplished together since the pandemic started: protecting three properties that preserved another 140 acres of green space in southern Michigan; and opening our seventh public preserve, The Anthony & Rose Shatter Family Preserve.
The last two years have not been easy. But with your generous and steadfast support, we persevered and are emerging stronger than before. And the timing couldn’t be better. Currently, we are faced with another pressing challenge: climate change. Join us with a gift today of $35, $50, $100, $250, or whatever you can afford, and help Legacy step up to the challenge.
Big issues like climate change can feel overwhelming. Current climate forecasts show rising annual temperatures continue to shift seasonal periods, accelerate loss of animal, plant, and insect populations, alter animal behavior, increase changes in precipitation patterns, and produce more extreme weather events. But despite the ‘climate doom,’ we can all be part of the solution and land trusts like Legacy are proud to do our part.
Did you know that land protection is a large piece of the climate change solution? Big or small, every property Legacy protects locally makes a difference to mitigate climate change globally. Every acre of land helps reduce community-wide carbon footprints and enhances the resilience of natural and developed environments to ease climate change impacts.
In fact, the 25-acre forest at Legacy’s Shatter Preserve captures 2,950 metric tons of carbon dioxide which is equal to the emissions from more than 750 cars in one year!
In the next few months we are looking forward to protecting four more properties and adding 180 more acres of green space to the greater climate change solution. Donate $35, $50, $100, $250, or whatever you can afford, and help Legacy protect land that will be part of solution.
We need your support more than ever to maintain our productivity and to fuel a better future for everyone. It is with your continued support that we will be able to tackle the next challenge in front of us. We are committed to being part of the climate change solution alongside the world, our country, our state, and you!
Yours in Conservation,
Diana Kern
