Acquired in 2018, the Anthony & Rose Shatter Family Preserve was made possible through the joint efforts of the Salem Township Board of Trustees—via the township’s Land Preservation and Conservation Board—along with Washtenaw County’s Natural Areas Preservation Program, the Ann Arbor Greenbelt, and Legacy. This 25-acre preserve is home to a mature woodland dotted with various wetland types. Weave your way through beech-maple and oak-hickory forest and take in the property’s buttonbush swamps and abundant populations of blue cohosh.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, implementing our management plans for this preserve have been slowed. In time we will install boardwalks along wet sections of trail and eventually a floating boardwalk to connect our trails system through the larger wetland area. Our plans also include a formal parking area along Brookville Road. Currently, public access to the property is available through a temporary trailhead along Brookville Road.
