Project MOW Kick-Off & Sheep Supervision @ Lloyd and Mabel Johnson Preserve (8/17/25)

August 17 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Project MOW Sheep

Interested in getting baaaaaaack to nature with some furry farm friends? Want to explore the intersection of animal husbandry and land stewardship? Volunteer with Legacy Land Conservancy to help maintain a mobile sheep herd that will be eating woody invasive plants on the Lloyd and Mabel Johnson Preserve!

Take part in a week-long volunteer opportunity with Legacy Land Conservancy, supporting Project MOW—a Ypsilanti-based company that uses sheep to manage invasive plants without herbicides! Volunteers will help monitor and care for a mobile sheep herd as they graze woody invasive plants at the Lloyd and Mabel Johnson Preserve

Between Sunday, August 17 and Sunday, August 24, Legacy will be hosting Project MOW and its hungry herd. The sheep will be fenced in around the hedgerow and supervised by volunteers as they browse invasive understory plants. (The’ll be baaaaack in September, but we will have a separate volunteer sign-up for that.)

All volunteers are required to attend the kick-off training on Sunday, August 17 from 10:00 am–12:00 pm at Johnson Preserve. Project MOW staff will lead a session on sheep and pen care, and volunteers will assist in setting up the temporary fencing. At the end of the training, participants will sign up for flexible daily shifts for the week of August 18–24.

Registration is REQUIRED for both the training and the week-long volunteer opportunity. Space is limited, so please register in advance to secure your spot. This event is open to all ages, but participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Please RSVP here!

  • Please dress for the weather and in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
  • Pants and closed-toe shoes are a must, regardless of the temperature, to protect from poison ivy and scratches while working outside.
  • Don’t forget a water bottle and sunscreen.
  • We also suggest you bring bug spray to reduce the risk of exposure to ticks and other biting insects.

Meet at Lillie Park South — Johnson Preserve and Lillie Park are connected by a trail. We will convene at the red gazebo located on the eastern edge of Lillie Park South’s parking lot, next to the trail entrance to Johnson Preserve.
