Preserve Event 9/12/26: Project MOW at Johnson Preserve
Interested in getting baaaaaaack to nature with some furry farm friends? Want to explore the intersection of animal husbandry and land stewardship? Join Legacy Land Conservancy and help maintain a mobile sheep herd that will be eating woody invasive plants on the Lloyd and Mabel Johnson Preserve!

Legacy will be hosting Project MOW, an Ypsilanti-based company, and its sheep as an herbicide-free method to control invasive plants. The use of sheep is a form of holistic management that reduces the usage of fossil fuels and chemicals on our preserve. The sheep will be fenced in around hedgerows between prairies and supervised by volunteers as they browse invasive understory plants to make way for native species!
All that are interested in volunteering for sheep monitoring MUST attend this kick-off training event on September 12th from 10 am to 12 pm at Johnson Preserve. Project MOW will go over sheep and pen care, and help set up the temporary sheep fencing. There will be plenty of opportunities for sheep interaction and to ask any questions you may have about restoration! Attendees will be able to sign up for flexible daily shifts from September 13 to September 19.
Registration is required for the volunteer opportunity and kick-off event. Slots are limited, so please register in advance to sign-up and ensure your slot. This event is open to all ages, however participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
REGISTER- Dress for the weather (and the sheep!) in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
- Wear a long sleeve shirt, pants, and closed toe shoes, regardless of the temperature to protect from poison ivy and ticks.
- Please bring a water bottle, bug spray, and sunscreen.
Meet us at Lillie Park South! Johnson Preserve and Lillie Park are connected by a trail. We will be convening at the red gazebo located on the eastern edge of Lillie Park South’s parking lot. The gazebo is adjacent to the start of the trail we will use to walk over to Johnson Preserve.
