Preserve Event 4/11/26: Vernal Pool Training at Johnson Preserve

April 11 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join Legacy Land Conservancy for a hands-on Vernal Pool Training at Johnson Preserve on April 11. Learn how these small, seasonal wetlands play an outsized role in forest ecosystems–and how to help monitor them through Michigan’s statewide citizen science effort.

Registration is required.

  • This interactive training will introduce vernal pool indicator species, soils, and habitats, with opportunities to collect samples and explore what’s living beneath the surface. Expect to get a little
    muddy!
  • Wear muck boots or waders
  • Dress for the weather and in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
  • Wear a long sleeve shirt and pants regardless of the temperature. It will help protect from poison ivy, ticks, and getting scratched up while outside.
  • Bring a water bottle, bug spray, and sunscreen.

This program is ideal for aspiring volunteers, families, and anyone curious about wetland ecology, but the training also serves as a foundation for people interested in learning how to monitor vernal pools as part of the Michigan Vernal Pool Patrol (MVPP). Once part of the Patrol, you can help the Michigan Natural Features Inventory gather information on the distribution and status of vernal pools in
Michigan.

This is Legacy Land Conservancy’s fourth year as a MVPP partner. Trained in surveying for vernal pools, Legacy continues to document and map them on our preserves.
